fix you can try on your next loaf — no theory, no fluff.
Three sections. One mission — your next loaf is the best one yet.
A field manual built for the intermediate baker who is tired of vague advice
and wants to know exactly what went wrong, and exactly what to change.

From the author
Making my first loaf of sourdough was the most fun I'd had in a kitchen in years.
The ones that came after taught me everything — what each mistake actually means,
and what to change next. This guide is what I wish I'd had from the start.

The approach
Most sourdough advice tells you what to do. This one tells you what went wrong — and exactly what to change.
The guide is built on four principles. They shape every page, every diagram,
and every fix it recommends.
01
Visual first
Every problem starts with a picture.
You match what your loaf looks like against a photographic index — no guessing what "open crumb" or "weak ear" actually means.
02
Specific fixes
Three concrete changes, not vague advice.
No "try adjusting hydration." Every fix tells you the exact variable, the direction to move it, and how to tell if it worked on the next bake.
03
Plain English
No jargon, no wild-yeast philosophy.
You shouldn't need a microbiology degree to bake a loaf you're proud of. Concepts are explained in the language of the kitchen, not the lab.
04
Built to print
The diagnostic tree lives on your fridge.
The decision tree and starter log are designed for letter and A4 paper. Print them once, refer to them every bake.
A note on testimonials
Sourdough Archive is brand new. You won't find reader quotes on this page yet —
we'd rather earn them than invent them. Be among the first readers, and if the guide
changes your next bake, we'd love to hear about it.
Questions, answered
Honest answers about the guide.
What sourdough problems does the guide actually fix?
The ten most common failures intermediate bakers run into: dense or gummy crumb, flat loaves, no oven spring, weak or closed ears, sluggish starter, sticky unshapeable dough, tough leathery crust, aggressively sour flavor, pale crust, and structureless crumb. Each problem gets a photograph, a root-cause diagnosis, and three specific changes to try on the next bake.
Is this for beginners or experienced bakers?
It's written for the intermediate baker — someone who has baked at least a handful of loaves, knows the basic process, but keeps hitting the same recurring problems. Absolute beginners can still benefit, but the guide assumes you already know what bulk fermentation, hydration, and shaping mean.
Do I need special equipment or ingredients?
No. The fixes work with any flour you can buy at a grocery store, a basic kitchen scale, and a Dutch oven or baking stone. The guide includes a hydration table covering 14 common flour brands so you can adjust without re-buying anything.
How long is the PDF and what format is it in?
38 pages, delivered as a standard PDF that opens on phone, tablet, or computer — and prints cleanly to letter or A4 paper. The diagnostic tree and starter log are designed to be printed and pinned to the fridge.
Is the guide really free? What's the catch?
Genuinely free. The only thing we ask is your email so we can send the PDF and occasional follow-up notes when we publish new editions. Unsubscribe anytime — your address is never sold or shared.
How fast will I get the PDF after signing up?
Within about one minute. The download link is sent automatically by email. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder for a message from Sourdough Archive and mark it as "Not spam" so the follow-up editions land in your inbox.
